Why not simulate the whole system?

In the TechniSolve RefSim program, we do an energy balance between a catalog compressor and the evaporator / condenser coils.  The compressor performance is based on published data and therefore includes all losses and efficiencies.  The actual system is fixed to the single stage vapor compression cycle consisting of a compressor, an evaporator and a condenser.

We now consider another problem.

What it you want to extend the simulation to include the ambient conditions and the load?

For this, you need a program that will allow you to configure the plant components.

The FrigoSim program was written in Norway by Even Thorbergsen.

The FrigoSim program has the following components (84 component models),

  • Compressors
    • Reciprocating (cooled and speed controlled)
    • Screw (economiser port option)
    • Turbo (includes cooled turbo)
  • Heat Exchangers
    • Simple heat exchanger
    • Evaporator
    • Condenser
  • Storage
  • Heaters
  • Flash chambers
  • Valves
    • Throttle, back-up
    • Three way
  • Pumps and fans
    • fixed flow
    • Speed controlled
  • Pipes, manifolds and headers
  • Measuring devices

and a large set of refrigerants (35 refrigerants) and secondary fluids (13 pure fluids and 12 aqueous fluids).

In simple terms, you build a system by joining together the necessary components.

The example above is an air cooled air conditioner that has moist air onto the evaporator.  With the FrigoSim program, you can add controls like superheat and subcooling.

FrigoSim can be used for systems other than refigeration cycles.  The example below shows a system with a stratified storage tank and an accumulator.  The pumps have pre-defined demand cycles.  The program shows how the temperature in the storage tank varies with time.

Download a copy of this program and try it out for yourself.

  1. Download FrigoSim receiving the file FrigoSim.zip (1.85 MByte).
  2. Create a separate directory, e.g. c:\FrigoSim and copy FrigoSim.zip to this directory.
  3. Ask for a free demo license, stating your name, address and affiliation. A license file is required to be able to run FrigoSim. This file will be generated based on the information you supply.
  4. After having got a license file by e-mail from Frigosoft, copy it to the same directory and rename it to FrigoSim.lic.
  5. Unzip FrigoSim.zip using WinZip or similar and read readme.txt for further installation.
  6. The language files for German, Italian, Spanish and Finnish are only available through a purchase of FrigoSim.
  7. Download the FrigoSim Instruction Manual (20 kBytes).
